Welcome and Hello

This first discussion is for us to get to know each other and to ensure that everyone can connect. So let's break the ice and say who we are and what we do.

A good idea is to start by reading some of the suggested books/ articles/ journals on our reading list - Suggested Reading.  Make brief notes on everything you read and get into the habit from the word go of keeping a record of author, title, date of publication and publisher and in the case of web pages, keep an annotated folder with the links you have found useful.

The Module Handbook and Guide can be found by clicking here. Assessment and evaluation documents can be downloaded by clicking here.

Feb 19th

Can I ask what is due in on the 19th February? I have read the induction pack and am currently working on unit one. Is it just the needs analysis and justification statement?

Hi Troy

My name is Martin and I am new to the course as well. I know Croydon well and used to live in Tooting. In the comedy show Citezen Smith used to live there. I am a secondary Mathematics teacher working at an International school in Shanghai. I see for your email that you have the 19th of feb as our first deadline. I am a little unsure of these deadlines. Do we meet the same dealines as the Sept cohort or do we have seperate deadlines?

Hello Troy and martain, I am Sandra (Year 2 teacher with lots of responsibilities) and I've just completed my first module on Specific Learning Difficulties. I have just enrolled for Bilingualism. I don't quite understand if the first assignment should be sent in for Feb 19th but our tutor will answer you soon I'm sure.

19th Feb

Hi I'm Alice, A lead teacher in a special school run by the Priory group. Im based in Devon. Martin lives even further away from me !!! I'm lost already only just negotiated enrollment and havent a clue about 19th Feb deadline. HELP!! What am I giving in? My idea is about transitions of students with ASD some of which have been out of education for some time, and their integration back into education! Either that or the question of ritualistic and compulsive disorders and how they are handled within the classroom. Anyway ..... someone talk to me! Alice

Hi all,
Has everyone decided what their focus will be? I am still trying to narrow it down but I would like to do something around Personal Learning Thinking Skills (PLTS) and how they can apply to children with special needs. I will phone up today and ask about teh Feb 19th deadline.

Hi all!

I've just joined the programme - a little late but hopefully I haven't missed too much. I am working in KS1 at the moment in a school in Bishops Stortford, Herts and I'm hoping to develop my understanding of Inclusion and Special Needs. Nervous about learning in this manner but excited at the same time!! I am a bit worried about the Feb 19th assignment that I've just read about.... can anyone help me with any info please? Looking forward to chatting to you all

Regards, Jane

Hi all!

Hi everyone again. I'm not sure if i've done the right thing but i've given in something for unit one. Can't see where dates are to give things in but seemed to think from what everyone else said it should be 19th. Its hard to pinpoint an investigation isn't it? I've decided on the use of AFL with autistic students. PLTs will feature in there somewhere too. What is everyone else doing? Alice from Devon.

research

Hi everyone I am trying to complete unit one which I thought we had 15 weeks to complete, sometime in April, am I wrong? Nieves I am afraid I'm not doing G+T. My research will focus on Bilingualism. I suppose your research would be directed by what you want to know. I was thinking of doing G+T myself because I wanted to know how schools accommodate their G+T learners.

Hi Sanjah
Perhaps you can focus on Gifted Bilingual children? I have 2 bilingual kids on the G&T register so if I can help with surveys/info I will. From a parent point of view I would be interested to read your research document when you finish.

Thanks Nieves for your suggestion. I am still thinking. I am moving so slowly I thought I would have completed unit one already. I haven't left myself enough time for proof reading at all. We've been very busy at school with assessments and open evenings, such things are time consuming. Have you come across any up to date policies on bilingualism ?

Hi Sandra
I haven't come across any up to date policies on bilingualism but I wonder whether the recent influx of Polish children in this country may have forced some schools to create such policies. Perhaps you can contact schools in those areas of the country where a lot of Poles seem to have settled? Sorry I can't be of more help.

Thanks nieves, there isn't time to use your suggestion now but I will approach some neighboring schools to see what changes have been made to direct the teaching and learning of Polisha children. Thanks for the idea and good luck with unit one.

Where has everyone gone? I guess we are all busy with school work and trying to do our studies at the same time. Have a good summer everyone.
